Persistent organic pollutants are a group of chemicals that are highly toxic to humans and wildlife, can persist for many years in the environment before transforming into less dangerous forms, bioaccumulate in the food chain, and can be transported over great distances by air and water.

Persistent organic pollutants have been widely used in agricultural and industrial applications. They are unintentionally produced and released from many anthropogenic activities around the world. Specific health effects of these chemicals include cancer, allergies and hypersensitivity, damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems, reproductive disorders and impaired immune system.

Threats to human health and the environment were first addressed under the Stockholm Convention adopted in 2001. There are 26 persistent organic pollutants listed today.
