This standard specifies a method for the determination of dissolved bromide, chloride, nitrate, nitrite, orthophosphate and sulfate anions in wastewater.
The lower application limit is W 0,05 mg/l for bromide and nitrite and W 0,1 mg/l for chloride, fluoride, nitrate, orthophosphate and sulfate. The lower bound of the application depends on the matrix and the interferences encountered.
The working range can be extended to lower concentrations (eg W 0,01 mg/l) if an appropriate pre-treatment is applied to the sample (eg conditions for trace analysis, pre-concentration technique) or if an ultraviolet (UV) is applied.
The sample is pretreated, if necessary, to remove solids, sulfite and metal ions. Relevant anions (bromide, chloride, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, orthophosphate and sulfate) are separated by liquid chromatography applying an anion exchange resin as the stationary phase and aqueous solutions of weak mono- and dibasic acids as the eluent. Detection is carried out using a conductivity detector (CD).
When using CDs it is important that the eluents have a sufficiently low conductivity. Therefore, CDs are often combined with a suppressor device (cation exchanger) which will reduce the conductivity of the eluent and convert the sample species to their respective acids.
