This part of ISO 787 specifies a general test method for determining the percentage by mass of solute in boiling water in a sample of pigment or filler.
ISO 787-8 specifies a method for determining the percent by mass of water-soluble matter by cold extraction. For most pigments and fillers, these two test methods will yield different results and therefore it is important to clearly state in a specification which method is to be used and which method is used in the test report.
The mass of the test portion used should be chosen according to the type of material and the amount of water-soluble substance in the material. This is particularly important for materials containing large amounts of water-soluble substances. In all cases, the same test portion mass should be taken for repeat tests or tests performed in several different laboratories.
If the material does not disperse easily in water, use a wetting agent. In the case of ethanol-insoluble materials, an appropriate volume of ethanol can be added; In the case of ethanol-soluble pigments, use a nonionic wetting agent such as 10 ml of a 0,01% solution of ethylene oxide condensate. If the wetting agent is non-volatile under the test conditions, an appropriate correction from the blank test should be made.
Add 200 ml of boiling water and mix. If a different time is not specified for the material tested, boil the suspension for 5 minutes. A coagulant may be used if the semi-colloidal nature of the material makes it desirable, provided that the material chosen is such that it does not affect the subsequent determination of the acidity or alkalinity of the aqueous extract and only the minimum amount is provided.
