This test is also known as the Limulus Amipocyte Lysate (LAL) test or "pyrogen" test because of the ability of endotoxins to cause fever in mammals. It is important not to confuse the USP 85 BET test with the rabbit pyrogen test USP 151. Endotoxin testing can be performed for the final release of raw and in-process materials as well as pharmaceutical and medical device products.
The LAL gel-clot endotoxin testing technique is used to detect or quantify endotoxins in a sample based on coagulation of the lysate reagent in the presence of endotoxin.
