ASTM F1001-12 Standard Guide for Chemical Selection When Evaluating Protective Clothing Materials

The ASTM F1001-12 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the chemical properties and test methods of protective clothing materials. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F1001-12 Standard guide for chemical selection when evaluating protective clothing materials.

ASTM F1001-12 Standard Guide for Chemical Selection When Evaluating Protective Clothing Materials

In this standard, it proposes a list of chemicals to encourage those who evaluate chemical protective clothing to test a minimum number of chemicals together. This list makes it easier to compare data from different sources. This standard also serves individuals and organizations that develop or evaluate materials during the screening of protective clothing materials.

Test methods applicable to the use of the guideline included in the ASTM F1001-12 standard include, but are not limited to:

  • ASTM F903-10 Standard test method for the resistance of materials used in protective suits to penetration with liquids
  • ASTM F739-12e1 Standard test method for liquid and gas permeability through protective clothing materials under continuous contact conditions

Chemical gas batteries should not be used to test the material penetration resistance, because the test method included in the ASTM F903 standard is designed to measure liquid penetration only.

ASTM F1001-12 standard is used to protect materials against gaseous chemical battery. The evaluation is primarily intended for materials used for making fully evaporative protective clothing or other clothing designed to prevent exposure to chemical vapors or gases. Vapor-protective clothing that evaluates and displays only an adequate level of infiltration against vapors and gases, is suitable for protection against vapors and gases. Protective clothing that covers only a part of the body or without steam resistant hoods, tops or interfaces does not protect against dangerous chemical vapors and gases.

Within the framework of laboratory services of materials, our organization provides testing services for chemical selection while evaluating ASTM F1001-12 protective clothing materials.
