High Visibility Clothing (ISO 20471)

By the International Standards Organization (ISO), the characteristics of high-visibility garments and ISO 20471 standard has been designed to explain the test methods. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 20471 Clothing with high visibility warning - Test methods and properties.

Today, business managements in many sectors give importance to the use of protective clothing. In most sectors, businesses strongly focus on health and safety, prepare the work environment, fulfill their responsibilities as employers, and try to protect the workforce.

Protective clothing in general includes special workwear, helmets for the head and sturdy boots for the feet. Mouth and nose are important organs to prevent inhalation of hazardous substances and to protect eyesight and hearing. Protective clothing is important in many key sectors and workplaces, especially construction, transportation, laboratory, security and food. In all sectors at risk, such as loud noises, dusts, gases, heavy objects, chemicals, hot surfaces or materials and biological agents, businesses have to invest in protective safety clothing.

In this context, high-visibility garments are protective clothing designed to visually emphasize the presence of the wearer and to make the risk situation visible when illuminated by any daylight or the headlights of a vehicle. The ISO 20471 standard describes requirements for this type of clothing.

High-visibility clothing is divided into three groups based on risk assessment. Each group should have the minimum reflective surface area described in the standard. These surface areas are determined separately for the required background material, retroreflective material (reflective material) and combined material.
