ISO 16602 Protective Clothing for Chemical Protection

The ISO 16602 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), has been published to explain the properties and test methods of protective clothing prepared with the aim of protecting workers with chemicals. The full name of this standard is as follows: ISO 16602 Protective clothing for protection against chemicals - Classification, labeling and performance requirements.

ISO 16602 Protective Clothing for Chemical Protection

The standard in question is designed for clothing that will protect workers against the adverse effects of chemicals and explains the requirements for the minimum performance strength, classification and labeling of these clothing.

The main protective clothing falling within the scope of the ISO 16602 standard are, but are not limited to: encapsulating suits, liquid-proof clothing, overalls, jackets, pants, bibs, headgear, sleeves, and shoes and boots. Chemical protective clothing used for protection against airborne particles is outside the scope of this standard. This type of clothing is handled in ISO 13982-1 standard.

The ISO 16602 standard does not address gloves, boots, eye and face protection devices, and respiratory protective equipment unless they are an integral part of protective clothing. Nor does it address protective clothing against biological or thermal hazards, ionizing radiation or radioactive contamination, and special clothing used in hazardous chemical emergencies. Chemical protective clothing used in dangerous situations is handled in standards such as EN 943-2, NFPA 1991 and NFPA 1992.

Briefly, this standard aims to provide minimum requirements for companies producing chemical protective clothing to test, classify and label chemical protective clothing. It also provides recommended levels of performance for certain applications to assist users of these products, to explain descriptions of test methods referenced, and to make hazard and risk assessments.

Within the framework of the laboratory services of the materials, our organization also provides protective clothing testing services for protection against ISO 16602 Chemicals.
