Protective Clothing Tests

16 CFR 1610 Flammability Test

The 16 CFR Part 1610 standard, which is generally a standard used in flammability tests, explains the requirements for flammability of textile products and offers test methods. This standard was developed by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH).

16 CFR 1610 Flammability Test

This standard is also applied to protective masks as a textile product. This standard specifies three flammability performance classes for textiles, hence mask materials, and thus restricts the use of any hazardous flammable material. In short, the flammability of textile materials used in mask production is tested within the framework of the standard in question, and the user health is protected.

The purpose of the 16 CFR 1610 standard on the flammability of clothing textiles is to provide standard methods for testing and grading the flammability of clothing textiles and textiles, thereby reducing the risks of injury and death, and prohibiting the use of dangerously flammable textiles.

The 16 CFR 1610 standard provides methods for testing the flammability of textiles intended for clothing. This standard specifies three flammability classes, determines the conditions that textile products must meet for classification, and prevents the use of textiles with unsuitable combustion properties.

The requirements of the 16 CFR 1610 standard apply to finished garments for consumer use and textile fabrics or materials in ready-to-use form. This includes protective masks. Textile products not covered by this standard are explained in the standard.

The combustion classification determined by the standard is as follows:

Flat surface textile fabrics,

  • Class 1 Normal flammability: Burning time 3,5 seconds or more is acceptable
  • Class 2 Intermediate flammability: Not applicable for flat surface textile fabrics
  • Class 3 Fast and intense burning: Burning time less than 3,5 seconds, unacceptable

In raised surface textile fabrics,

  • Class 1 Normal flammability: Acceptable if the burning time is more than 7.0 seconds or between 0-7 seconds without base burning
  • Class 2 Intermediate flammability: Acceptable if base burning and burning time is between 0-7 seconds
  • Class 3 Fast and intense burning: Unacceptable if the burning time with base burning is less than 4 seconds

Our organization provides non-flammability testing services of protective masks within the framework of 16 CFR 1610 standard to healthcare organizations and manufacturers who demand it, within the framework of national and international standards, with a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies.
