AS/NZS 4602-1 High Visibility Safety Clothing - Part 1 - Clothing for High Risk Applications

The “AS/NZS 4602.1 High-visibility safety clothing - Part 1: Clothing for high-risk applications” standard, a joint Australian / New Zealand standard published by the Australian Standards Council, recognizes the harsh conditions that workwear must protect and defines how to produce high-visibility clothing. . Design for workwear focuses specifically on the configuration and quantity of two safety materials: fluorescent and retroreflective.

Clothing for high-risk applications is mandatory safety equipment for road, rail and other industries with similarly high levels of risk. Safety clothing should be used by workers who need remote visibility against complex backgrounds and around conditions that obstruct vision.

The AS/NZS 4602.1 standard is generally considered together with the “AS/NZS 1906.4 Retroreflective materials and devices for road traffic control - Part 4: High visibility materials for safety clothing” standard. Materials defined in the AS/NZS 1906.4 standard provide different levels of visibility depending on the time of day, the amount of light available and what type of light it is (natural or artificial).

The AS/NZS 4602.1 standard also describes which clothing construction is safest for day, night and day use. Depending on work requirements, personnel must evaluate what clothing will provide the best visibility.

In short, this standard specifies the requirements for high-visibility safety clothing, without reference to specific types or styles. This is done with the aim of giving the designer or buyer as much flexibility as possible in choosing a suitable clothing design to meet different needs in terms of weather conditions, type of work and so on, and to be innovative in designing tools to encourage users

To achieve the most effective use of high-visibility clothing, wearers must take advantage of the high visibility of fluorescent and retroreflective materials.

The fluorescent material is impregnated with a pigment that has the ability to convert light in the ultraviolet spectrum to light in the visible spectrum, thereby visibly increasing the amount of visible light reflected from its surface. Therefore, it only works when a significant amount of ultraviolet light (i.e. sunlight) falls on the material. Artificial night light sources contain very little ultraviolet light. Two important points to note are that the pigment particles undergo changes in the process of converting ultraviolet light, which often leads to the color fading quite quickly. Additionally, pigments can generally only be applied to synthetic fibers. Clothing made from some synthetic fibers is not as comfortable to wear in hot conditions as natural fibers.

Reflective materials, on the other hand, cause almost all of the light reflected from their surfaces to be directed back along the path of the incoming beam. An observer will not benefit from a retroreflective object unless he observes it from a position closely aligned with the light source, usually directly behind it, such as a motor vehicle driver sitting almost directly behind vehicle headlights.

This standard provides minimum requirements for high-visibility safety clothing to both the companies that produce the clothing and those responsible for working in relevant high-risk situations.

Clothing specified in the AS/NZS 4602.1 standard is classified as follows:

  • Class D: Clothing consisting of non-fluorescent or other non-reflective high-visibility material designed for outdoor daytime use only.
  • Class N: Clothing containing retroreflective elements on an unspecified background, designed for nighttime use only.
  • Class D/N: Clothing containing retroreflective elements on a fluorescent or other non-reflective high-visibility background material designed for both day and night use.
