Describing the requirements and testing methods for sunglasses and similar glasses, the EN ISO 12312 standard is a European standard on its basis and has been re-published by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This international standard has replaced the European standard EN 1836, and contains important changes. For example, there is no longer any distinction between the two optical classes. The scattered light requirement was replaced by the need for wide-angle scattering.
Evaluation of the transmission requirements in the UV spectral range is provided. Spectral permeability is evaluated in the range of 475 nm to 650 nm. Sunglasses are not suitable for twilight or night driving if the light transmittance is below 75 percent. By placing the sunglasses as they are worn, polarization axes are evaluated. The need for side protection has been introduced for filter sunglasses and additional information has been introduced to the user with the new standard.
The EN 1836 standard no longer guarantees the suitability assumption for sunglasses. All sunglasses that will be released in the European Union countries as of 2015 will have to comply with EN ISO 12312 standard. This standard applies to each sunglasses, not to the model and type. Tropical sunglasses must also comply with this standard.
