AATCC 127 Water Resistance - Hydrostatic Pressure Test

AATCC 127 standard has been developed by the American Textile Chemists and Colorists Association (AATCC) in order to determine the water resistance properties of textile fabrics and explain hydrostatic pressure test management. The full name of this standard is as follows: AATCC 127 Water resistance - Hydrostatic pressure test.

The standard in question offers a test method to determine the resistance of a fabric against water penetration under hydrostatic pressure. This test method can be applied to any kind of fabric including water resistant or water repellent finishing fabrics.

Water resistance in the textile industry is also related to the water repellent property of the fabric structure, fibers and yarns. The results obtained in these tests may differ from those obtained with other test methods accepted by AATCC for resistance to rain or water spray.

During the test, one surface of the sample is exposed to a constant rate and increasing hydrostatic pressure until three points of leakage appear on the other surface. Water can be applied under or over the test sample. Hydrostatic pressure is the force distributed over an area applied by water. The resistance of the fabric to water is the resistance it shows against wetting and penetration with water. The repellency of water is the characteristic of fiber, yarn or fabric resistant to wetness in fabrics.

The test sample should be taken diagonally across the width of the fabric to represent the material. At least three samples must be taken from each code and sample sizes must be at least 200 x 200 mm. Also, the sample should not be overly handled and care should be taken to avoid contamination.

Other standards and rules published by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) must also be followed during the tests.
