AATCC 42 Water Resistance - Impact Penetration Test

The AATCC 42 standard has been developed by the American Textile Chemists and Colorists Association (AATCC) in order to determine the water resistance properties of textile fabrics and explain the impact penetration test management. The American Textile Chemists and Colorists Association generally prepares standard test methods and evaluation procedures used for testing and analysis of nonwoven materials.

The AATCC 42 Water resistance standard includes properties and test methods for any textile fabric with or without a water-repellent or water-repellent coating. During this test, the resistance of the fabrics to water penetration is measured and the possible resistance of the fabrics to rain is determined. In particular, this standard is used to measure the penetration resistance of clothing fabrics. The results obtained with this test method depend on the water repellency of the fibers and yarns, the structure of the fabric and the finishing processes.

The spray effect and water resistance properties of the fabrics are determined by the mentioned standard. For this purpose, a volume of water is sprayed onto the taut surface of a test sample supported by a predetermined drying paper. The blotter is then weighed once more to determine the water penetration and the sample is classified according to the weight difference.

In advanced laboratories, impact penetration tester is used for this purpose. This device is for determining the fabric's resistance to water penetration, that is, the possible resistance of fabrics to rain penetration. This device is also used to test the water resistance (impact penetration performance) of medical protective clothing.
