ASTM D1777-96 Standard Test Method for Thickness of Textile Materials

Published by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), the ASTM D1777-96 standard provides a test method for measuring the thickness of many textile materials. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM D1777-96 Standard test method for thickness of textile materials.

ASTM D1777-96 Standard Test Method for Thickness of Textile Materials

The test method described in this standard applies to many types of fabrics, including woven fabrics, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knit fabrics, layered fabrics, and velvet fabrics. These textiles can be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin treated or otherwise treated.

The ASTM D1777-96 standard does not claim to address all of them if there are safety concerns for its use. It is the responsibility of the enterprises using this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of the restrictions in legal regulations before use.

While performing this test method, a sample is placed on the base of a thickness gauge and a weighted presser foot is lowered over the sample. The displacement between the sole and the presser foot is measured as the thickness of the sample.

Thickness is one of the basic physical properties of textile materials. In some industrial applications, thickness requires strict controls within certain limits. The mass and temperature properties of textile materials are generally estimated from thickness values and are useful in measuring some performance properties such as thickness, wear and before and after shrinkage.

The thickness value of many textile materials varies considerably depending on the pressure applied to the sample when measuring the thickness. In all cases, the apparent thickness varies inversely with the applied pressure. Therefore, it is important to indicate the pressure when determining any thickness value.

If there is no test method for thickness measurement for the textile product to be tested, or unless otherwise specified in the textile product specification or contract conditions, the test method described in the ASTM D1777-96 standard should be used in its entirety.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services for ASTM D1777-96 thickness of textile materials, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff, to the companies that demand
