ASTM D3776 / D3776M - 09a Standard Test Methods for Mass Per Unit Area (Weight) of Fabric

Published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM D3776 standard includes the measurement of fabric mass per unit area (weight) and provides test methods applicable to most fabrics. The standard provides four validated test methods:

• Option A: Complete piece, roll, bolt or cut (Part 7)
• Option B: Full width sample (Section 8)
• Option C: Small fabric sample (Chapter 9)
• Option D: Narrow fabrics (Chapter 10)

Fabric mass per unit area is generally expressed in two ways:

• Gram per square meter
• Gram per linear meter

The fabric mass is sometimes expressed inversely in linear meters per kilogram with the specified fabric width.
