ASTM F1001-12 Standard Guide for Choosing Chemicals for Evaluating Protective Clothing Materials

In the ASTM F1001-12 standard published by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), a list of chemical substances in both liquid and gaseous state is presented for the evaluation of protective clothing materials in test programs. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F1001-12 Standard guide for the selection of chemicals for evaluating protective clothing materials.

ASTM F1001-12 Standard Guide for Choosing Chemicals for Evaluating Protective Clothing Materials

This standard establishes a list of chemicals to encourage individuals and organizations that evaluate chemical protective clothing to test a minimum number of common chemicals. This list makes it simpler to compare data from different sources.

The list in this standard also serves material designers and evaluators who scan protective clothing items.

Applicable test methods for the use of the ASTM F1001-12 standard include, but are not limited to, the following two standards:

  • ASTM F903-18 Standard test method for the resistance of materials used in protective clothing to penetration by liquids
  • ASTM F739-12 Standard test method for the permeability of liquids and gases through protective clothing materials under continuous contact conditions

Chemical gases should not be used to test material penetration resistance, because the ASM F903 standard is designed to measure liquid penetration only.

Materials to gaseous chemicals This standard is intended primarily for materials used in the production of protective clothing or other clothing to prevent exposure to chemical vapors or gases. Protection against chemical vapors and gases is only suitable for vapor protective suits that have been evaluated and proven for inward leakage to appropriate levels against gases and vapors. Protective clothing that covers only part of the body or does not have vapor resistant protection do not protect against dangerous chemical vapors and gases.

Methods for evaluating the vapor protective performance of protective clothing groups include but are not limited to the following two standards:

  • ASTM F1052-14 Standard test method for pressure testing vapor protective suits
  • ASTM F2588-12 Standard test method for simulated man test (MIST) for protective communities

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard guide services for the selection of chemicals to evaluate ASTM F1001-12 protective clothing materials, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff, to the demanding enterprises.
