ASTM F1342-05 Standard Test Method for Puncture Resistance of Protective Clothing Material

The ASTM F1342 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the puncture resistance properties and test methods of protective clothing materials used for medical purposes. The full name of this standard, updated in 2013, is as follows: ASTM F1342 / F1342M-05 e1 Standard test method for puncture resistance of protective clothing material.

ASTM F1342-05 Standard Test Method for Puncture Resistance of Protective Clothing Material

The purpose of this test method is to determine the puncture resistance of protective clothing materials made of plastic or elastomeric films, coated fabrics, flexible materials, laminates or textile materials. However, the test method described here is not designed to measure the puncture resistance of any puncture encountered in protective clothing materials.

Simply in this test method, a piercing probe of a certain size is used to pierce the samples. The puncture resistance of the materials during testing is the resistance of the puncture, which is especially forced perpendicular to the surface of the material, and there is no supporting structure under the material to the sample. If it is desired to evaluate the puncture resistance for knotty type puncture, the following standard should be considered for this purpose: ASTM D2582-16 Puncture-spread tear resistance of plastic film and test method for thin coating.

To determine the puncture resistance of a sample of protective clothing during the test, the force required to penetrate a pointed piercing probe into the sample is measured. This test method describes three different protocols. Probe A is used to measure the puncture resistance of elastomeric materials, textiles and coated materials. Probe B is used to measure the puncture resistance of textiles and coated materials.

This standard does not take into account safety concerns regarding the use of protective clothing materials. It is directly the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of legal restrictions.

Within the framework of laboratory testing services, ASTM F1342 provides standard testing services to the puncture resistance of protective clothing material by our organization.
