ASTM F1670 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Materials Used in Protective Clothing to Synthetic Blood Penetration

The ASTM F1670 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the penetration resistance properties and test methods of materials used in making protective clothing. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F1670 / F1670M - 17a Standard test method for the resistance of materials used in protective clothing to penetration with synthetic blood.

The test method in question is based on the test method described in the ASTM F903 standard to measure the resistance of chemical protective clothing to the ingress of liquids (ASTM F903-10 Standard test method for the penetration resistance of materials used in protective clothing with liquids).

The test method in the ASTM F1670 standard is used to evaluate the finished items of protective clothing and material samples that are candidates for protective clothing. Finished materials of protective clothing include gloves, arm shields, aprons, overalls, headgear and boots.

Medical protective clothing materials are generally designed as a barrier for blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials. Many factors related to body fluids, such as surface tension, viscosity and polarity, affect the wetting and penetration properties of the materials as well as their structure and hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity.

The surface tension range of body fluids other than blood and saliva and the resulting surface tension range of synthetic blood are described in the standard. The synthetic blood mixture is prepared with a red dye and a thickening agent to aid visual detection during the tests.

This test method uses visual observations instead of analytical measurements to determine penetration. This test method is therefore used as a preliminary assessment for the possible penetration of blood and other body fluids. Then, other tests are carried out with microbiological difficulty and analytical method explained in ASTM F1671 standard.

Within the frame of laboratory test services, ASTM F1670 provides standard test services for the resistance of materials used in protective clothing to synthetic blood by our organization.
