ASTM F2299 / F2299M First Efficiency of Substances Used in Medical Facial Masks to Penetration with Particles Using Latex Spheres

The ASTM F2299 / F2299M standard is a standard developed by the American Testing and Materials Authority (ASTM). The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F2299 / F2299M - 03 (2017) Standard test method for determining the first efficiency of substances used in medical face masks to penetrate with particles using latex spheres.

This test method measures the initial filtration efficiency of materials used in medical face masks by exemplifying the representative volumes of up and down latex aerosol concentrations in a controlled air flow chamber. In these tests, materials are exposed to aerosol particle sizes of 0.1 to 5.0 μm and the results are evaluated. This standard offers specific test methods for both manufacturers and users. These tests form the basis of efficiency comparison between medical face mask materials.

However, it does not evaluate the effectiveness of medical face masks in preventing harmful particles from leaking in. Likewise, the design of the mask and the fit of the mask on the user's face are not covered by this test. In addition, this test method is not suitable for evaluating the materials used to ensure the effectiveness of protective clothing against particle risks.

The ASTM F2299 / F2299M standard creates a method for measuring the initial particle filtration efficiency of materials used in medical face masks using single-faced aerosols. This test method uses particle counts from 0.1 to 5.0 μm and air flow test speeds from 0.5 to 25 cm / s. The test procedure measures the filtration efficiency by comparing the number of particles in the feed stream with the filtrate.
