ASTM F2407 Standard Specification for Surgical Gowns for Use in Healthcare Facilities

The ASTM F2407 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the features and testing methods of surgical gowns used in healthcare facilities. The full name of this standard, which was last updated in 2013, is as follows: ASTM F2407-06 e1 Standard specification for surgical gowns for use in healthcare facilities.

ASTM F2407 Standard Specification for Surgical Gowns for Use in Healthcare Facilities

This standard describes a number of requirements for surgical gowns used to protect healthcare workers at risk of exposure to blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials. This standard also requires performing a barrier test based on the classification system of aprons created in the ANSI-AAMI PB70 standard.

The ASTM F2407 standard contains general safety requirements for surgical gowns that meet biocompatibility, sterility assurance and flame spread. It also contains important physical requirements for surgical gowns such as tensile strength, tear strength, seam strength, rolling strength, evaporative resistance test and water vapor transmission rate.

This standard does not cover protective clothing used for non-surgical applications such as insulation gowns or decontamination gowns. It also does not include hands-on equipment such as surgical gloves, patient examination gloves, or similar medical gloves. Equipment that protects the head and feet, such as goggles, face shields, surgical caps, surgical masks, respirators, operating room shoes, or surgical boots, is also outside the scope of this standard.

Surgical gowns are mainly disposable or multi-use products detected by the manufacturer. This standard is the basis for manufacturer companies for surgical gown performance and effectiveness. For multi-use gowns, this standard also takes into account the maximum number of cycles expected for washing and sterilization.

Within the framework of laboratory testing services, AATCC 42 Water resistance - Impact penetration testing services are also provided by our organization.
