BS 6526 Household Oven Gloves - Requirements and Test Methods

This standard specifies the minimum size and performance requirements for the materials and thermal properties of household oven gloves, along with marking requirements. Provides design recommendations and a method for determining the rate of thermal diffusion through household oven gloves.

Oven gloves work on the basic principle of low conductivity of some materials such as silicone (water and stain resistant). This low conductivity feature of the materials used in oven mitts prevents heat transfer from the gloves to the user's hands. Traditionally, these gloves are made of insulated fabric.

The material that makes up the palm of an oven glove is placed on a thermocouple mounted on a polyethylene block and connected to temperature recording equipment. A heated brass cylinder is placed on the material and after a certain time the temperature rise is recorded.

The heat resistance of gloves depends largely on the material from which they are made. It is necessary to purchase gloves made of a material that can withstand heat up to at least 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It should also be able to withstand high temperatures for more than 10 seconds. Additionally, the best oven gloves should have an extra layer of protection to insulate hands and prevent burns.
