Some clothing provides adequate protection against the cold of the body, depending on the person's exposure to cold, physiology, the composition of his overall garment, and certain environmental features such as wind speed, humidity and temperature.

The EN 14058 standard sets the thermal resistance criterion to ensure that protective clothing is effective against the risks of cool environments. The thermal resistance has a textile-specific value and in a fixed state it shows the amount of dry heat that can pass through a textile layer as a result of the temperature change.

The performance requirements for air permeability, resistance to water penetration and thermal insulation in protective clothing falling within this standard are optional and are measured by the same criteria as EN 342 standard. For example, thermal resistance class should be 1-3, air permeability class 1-3 (optional), water resistance class 1-2 (optional).

These effects include not only low air temperatures, but also humidity and air velocity. Cold protective societies are excluded from this standard. The protective effects and requirements of shoes, gloves and separate head wear are beyond the scope of this standard.
