Protective Clothing Tests

EN 14325 Test Methods and Performance Classification of Chemical Protective Clothing Materials, Seams, Joints and Assemblies

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 14325 standard. The EN 14325 standard specifies performance classification and test methods for materials used in chemical protective clothing, including gloves and shoes. Gloves and boots should have the same chemical barrier barrier requirements as the fabric when an integral part of the garment.

EN 14325 Test Methods and Performance Classification of Chemical Protective Clothing Materials, Seams, Joints and Assemblies

This is a reference standard to which chemical protective clothing performance standards may refer in whole or in part, but this standard is not comprehensive in the sense that it may require product standards to be tested against test method standards not included in this standard.

While these performance levels are intended to be relevant to the use in which the chemical protective clothing will be used, it is necessary for the chemical protective clothing manufacturer or supplier to state the intended use of the protective clothing and a risk assessment to determine the correct level of performance for the user (the determinant) for the intended task.

Regular risk assessments carried out in work environments in businesses are important to identify the nature of any existing hazards and the associated risks. In risk assessment studies, attention is paid to employees, their level of movement, the equipment used and the nature of the environment. Protective clothing generally has to provide effective protection and comply with relevant standards. If an employee has to use more than one protective clothing at the same time, they should be compatible and effective with each other. In addition, protective clothing should be kept in good working order at all times.

This European standard describes the performance evaluation and testing methods of materials used in the manufacture of chemical protective clothing, including gloves and shoes. The EN 14325 standard mainly focuses on the following condition tests:

  • 4.4 Wear resistance
  • 4.5 Flexible cracking resistance
  • 4.7 Trapezoid tear resistance
  • 4.8 Explosion resistance
  • 4.9 Tensile strength
  • 4.10 Puncture resistance

In these tests, tests are carried out in accordance with the relevant standards first, and then the results are evaluated according to the tables in this standard. For example, abrasion resistance tests are first according to EN 530 (Martindale wear test), flexible cracking resistance according to EN ISO 7854, trapezoidal tear resistance according to EN ISO 9073-4, explosion resistance according to EN ISO 13938-1, tensile strength according to EN ISO. It should be tested according to the standard 13934-1 and puncture resistance according to the EN 863 standard.
