EN 13158 Protective Clothing - Riders - Protective Jackets for Equine Workers and Riders - Standard Test for Body and Shoulder Protectors

These protectors are intended to provide some protection against impacts from falls from horses and vehicles, and from impacts while on the ground or working with a horse due to falls. Impacts may be against the ground or objects such as trees or vehicles, or may be due to blows, kicks, or being stepped on.

The protectors covered by this Standard are not intended to provide complete protection against injury in accidents involving severe torsion, bending or elongation. Marking and information supply requirements are given.

Protective jackets and body protectors with removable parts, such as tailpieces or shoulder guards, must meet body protection coverage requirements without the attachment of removable parts or shoulder guards.

Shoulder protectors shall be tested by pulling away from their connections in the plane of the shield if worn under clothing, and pulled backwards by peeling over the shoulder if designed to be worn. Test forces should be applied to the shoulder protectors in three directions, forward, backward and laterally.

Protectors shall be visually and tactilely inspected and any rough or rough edges noted. Rigid structures such as buckles should be identified and recorded as failure of the true shield if a fall is likely to cause bruising to underlying tissues.
