The ISO 16604 standard has been designed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to describe the penetration resistance properties and test methods of materials used in making protective clothing. The full name of this standard is as follows: ISO 16604 Clothing for protection against contact with blood and body fluids - Determination of penetration resistance of protective clothing materials by blood-borne pathogens - Test method using Phi-X 174 bacteriophage. This standard was last revised and approved in 2020.
Particularly those working in healthcare institutions or those who are involved in the treatment and care of the sick are exposed to biological fluids that can infect the disease. These diseases caused by various microorganisms pose important risks for life and health.
The ISO 16604 standard describes a laboratory test method for determining the resistance of materials used in making protective clothing to penetration of blood-borne pathogens. During this test, a surrogate microbe that is under constant fluid contact is used. The success or failure of protective clothing is determined by determining viral penetration under a certain hydrostatic pressure within the framework of ISO 13994 standard (ISO 13994 Protective clothing against liquid chemicals - Determination of the resistance of protective clothing materials against penetration by pressurized liquids).
However, this test method includes a sensitive test procedure. Due to the time required to complete this test method, the material or protective clothing is not suitable for quality control or assurance processes. Also, this method is not always effective in testing protective clothing materials with thick inner linings that easily absorb test liquid.
