CAN/CGSB 155.20 applies to newly manufactured workwear worn to protect against unplanned hydrocarbon flash fire exposure. This standard defines a flash fire as "a fire that spreads rapidly through a diffuse fuel-air mixture without creating damaging pressure". The standard does not regulate special protective clothing, such as response gear, worn by firefighters, as it does not apply to planned or prolonged exposure to fire.
This standard specifies specific criteria for testing garments using mannequin tests (ASTM F1930), flammability (ASTM D6413), thermal shielding performance, and heat resistance and thermal shrinkage. There are additional requirements for disposable clothing, raincoat and steam and hot water protective clothing, as well as requirements for hardware, trim and labels.
