ISO 13688 General Requirements for Protective Clothing

ISO 13688 is not intended to be used alone, but only in conjunction with other standards that contain specific protective performance requirements. This standard covers the general requirements for all protective clothing requiring CE marking in European Union countries and should generally be considered together with the specific standard applied for the product in question.

This International Standard is a reference standard to be called in accordance with certain standards. This International Standard is not intended to be used alone, but only in conjunction with another standard that contains requirements for the specific performance of the product providing the protection.

The EN ISO 13688 standard describes general performance requirements for ergonomics, harmlessness, sizing, aging, compatibility and marking of protective clothing, and information that must be provided by the manufacturer with protective clothing.

Ergonomics is very important for protective clothing. Considering the safety features together with the correct design of the protective clothing, it must meet the requirements such as providing the user with sufficient comfort, not undergoing dimensional changes in repeated washes and being suitable for dry cleaning and washing. These clothes should not negatively affect the health of the user. Clothing must be marked in the correct size according to the standard body size. The one or more component properties of the protective garment should not change against the garment over time.

Meanwhile, the marking on garments must be in the correct language for the intended market, attached to the garments, be visible and resistant to proper cleaning. All supporting information must be included in the technical file to mark each component.

This standard, which replaces the previously published EN 340 standard, briefly makes it possible to specify the following mandatory requirements: ergonomics, comfort, safety, color fastness and dimensional change due to cleanliness (not more than three percent). CE marking is placed on the clothes produced according to this standard.
