This European standard specifies a test method for the determination of the resistance of materials of protective clothing, gloves and footwear to the penetration of potentially hazardous gaseous chemicals under the condition of continuous contact.
This test method is only applicable to the assessment of protection against gaseous chemicals that can be collected by liquid or gaseous collection media. This test method is not applicable to the evaluation of gaseous chemical mixtures. This test method describes changes to EN 16523-1 required to test against gaseous chemicals that may be collected by liquid or gaseous collection medium.
In the permeation test apparatus, the PPE (protective clothing, gloves and shoes) material separates the challenge chemical from the collection medium. The collection medium, which can be gas or liquid, is quantitatively analyzed for the concentration of the chemical and thus the amount of chemical penetrating the barrier as a function of time after initial contact with the PPE.
Care should be taken not to apply pressure to the challenge or collection chamber. Extremely high pressures can develop at high gas flow or as a result of attachments restricting gas flow from the chamber. Tightly packed beds of activated carbon or highly restrictive scatter tubes are examples of such attachments.
