The principle of the test method is applicable to a wider range of hot melt materials than specified by certain procedures, provided that appropriate precautions are taken to protect the test operator.
ISO 9185 and EN 373 have so far been used with reasonable success as basic test methods for materials used in the manufacture of clothing to protect against large splashes of molten metal. The EN and ISO specifications specify these test methods and set performance levels in terms of the mass of iron or aluminum splashed onto test materials without damaging the heat sensor film.
The revision of test methods in this International standard includes experience-based changes aimed at improving repeatability and responding to event data from the aluminum smelter industry. Therefore, a test procedure is applied to determine the protection afforded by materials when splashed with molten cryolite.
This revision also harmonizes the previously slightly different procedures in ISO 9185 and EN 373 for testing with molten aluminum in a single test procedure.
