TS EN ISO 18640-1 Protective Clothing for Firefighters

The EN ISO 18640-1 standard, which describes the specifications and test methods of protective clothing produced for firefighters, is a European standard on its basis and has been re-published by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This standard provides a test method for measuring and evaluating the physiological effects of protective clothing during a series of simulated activities under certain environmental conditions.

In this context, in order to evaluate the basic properties and thermophysiological properties of a protective suit designed and manufactured for firefighters, the following criteria are particularly emphasized: heat insulation in dry state, cooling properties during average metabolic activity and humidity regulation (dry and wet heat transfer) and drying behavior.

Standard measurements are made on material samples representing a garment or a combination of protective clothing. Optionally and in addition to the standard test method, the same test method is also used to characterize more extensive sets of protective clothing. At the same time, testing and evaluation studies of ready-made clothing products are also covered under this standard.

Briefly, the EN ISO 18640-1 standard describes a method of measuring combined heat and mass transfer through protective clothing used by firefighters. This test method has been developed for highly reproducible laboratory tests for heat and mass transfer in clothing systems under controlled conditions closely related to actual conditions.

The standard in question has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 18640-1 Protective clothing for firefighters - Physiological effect - Part 1: Measurement of heat and moisture transfer matched to the sweating body.
