Determination of Antiviral Activity of ISO 18184 Textile Products

Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 18184 standard describes the requirements and test methods for determining the antiviral activity of textile products. This standard covers woven and knitted fabrics, fibers, yarns, knits and similar textile products.

Determination of Antiviral Activity of ISO 18184 Textile Products

The global improvement in the standard of living causes consumers to look for health-protective products. The fact that people have to be crowded with other people in transportation vehicles, hospitals, nursing homes and in such areas and need protection against epidemic diseases has forced the development of products with protective effects for health and hygiene in the textile industry.

Textile products with antiviral properties are the result of the development of textile technology and biotechnology. As such textile products are relatively new products, new testing methods have to be developed to evaluate their properties. The lack of an integrated testing method has made both consumers and manufacturer companies hesitant to make accurate evaluations.

Antiviral textile products are textile products that can control the number of infectious virus particles that come into contact with the surface of the textile. In the design of these products, the technical fields of textile technology and biotechnology act together. As a result of these efforts, the demand to establish an international standard has started to grow. The ISO 18184 standard was born due to such a need. This standard provides a quantitative test method to evaluate the antiviral performance of textiles.

This standard proposes two methods for measuring the number of infective viruses in textile products: the plate method and the TCID50 method. Both methods can be preferred depending on the experience of the laboratory that will perform the tests.

While performing the tests, viruses are inoculated to a sample, within 2 hours to 24 hours after the specific contact time, the remaining infectious virus is counted and the reduction rate is calculated.

Within the scope of protective clothing tests, our organization also provides test services for determining the antiviral activity of ISO 18184 Textile products.
