The full name of this standard is as follows: ISO 22609 Clothing for protection against infectious agents - Medical face masks - Test method for resistance to penetration of synthetic blood (fixed volume, horizontally mirrored).
The standard in question provides a laboratory test method to measure the resistance of medical face masks to penetration with synthetic blood splashes. This standard focuses primarily on the performance of materials used in the production of medical face masks or certain material structures.
Apart from this, the performance of other factors affecting the overall protection of the medical face mask, such as the design and manufacture of the mask, such as filtration efficiency and pressure drop, are not covered by this standard. Also, when evaluating the performance of these standard medical face masks, it does not take into account the penetration of body fluids that accumulate in the medical face mask as a protection against exposure to air and contamination.
