The National Fire Protection Association is briefly known as NFPA. Since 1896, this organization is a global non-governmental organization that sets rules and standards to eliminate economic losses as well as deaths and injuries caused by fire, electricity and related hazards.
Almost every building, process, service, design and installation is affected by hundreds of codes and standards published by this organization. These standards reflect changing industry needs and evolving technologies.
NFPA is a non-governmental organization and does not have a legal mandate. It only designs standards, industry guidelines, and best practices. However, in particular, legal regulations on fire protection generally refer to NFPA standards and principles.
The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) employs more than six thousand volunteers who are experts in each area of interest, and there are more than two hundred technical codes and standards-forming committees. The most known and longest lasting set of rules is the fire code NFPA 1.
This code takes a comprehensive and integrated approach to fire hazard management and improves fire and life safety for the community and first responders.
