STM - 00162 Air Permeability (Back of Apron)

The concept of air permeability is widely used in the textile industry to evaluate fabric-specific properties. Especially the companies that produce outdoor clothing frequently use this information to describe the functional performance of these products. Several different standards are used to evaluate air permeability with different test conditions.

STM - 00162 Air Permeability (Back of Apron)

Air permeability is strongly influenced by both the material properties of the fabric and the structural properties of the fabric, such as the shape and value of the pores of the yarn. These depend on the structural parameters of the raw materials such as fibers and threads. Fabrics with hydrophilic components change their breathability under different humidity conditions.

Fabric production factors and applied finishing techniques cause a change in the length of the air flow paths of a fabric and affect the air permeability of the fabric. Fabrics with different surface textures on both sides of the fabric may have a different air permeability depending on the air flow direction.

STM-00162 Air permeability (back of apron) standard provides a procedure for evaluating the air permeability of aprons used for various purposes. At the same time, the ASTM D737-18 Standard test method for air permeability of textile fabrics, published by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), provides a test method that includes the measurement of the air permeability of textile fabrics. The test methods described in these standards apply to many types of fabrics, including woven fabrics, nonwovens, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knitted fabrics, layered fabrics, and velvet fabrics. These fabrics can be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin treated, or otherwise treated.

The test method described in both standards is considered satisfactory for acceptance testing of commercial shipments and is frequently applied. Air permeability is an important factor in the performance of many textile products such as gas filters, airbag fabrics, clothing, mosquito nets, parachutes, sails, awnings and vacuum cleaners.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides STM-00162 Air permeability (back of apron) testing services to the demanding enterprises within the framework of laboratory services of materials with a trained and expert staff.
