ISO 12402-8 relates to personal flotation devices (PFDs) for persons engaged in activities in or near water, whether for work or leisure. Manufactured, selected and maintained to this International standard, PFDs provide a reasonable guarantee of safety to a submerged person against the danger of drowning.
Within these main two classes are a range of support levels, buoyancy types, activation methods for inflatables, and ancillary items (such as locating aids), all of which affect the user's likelihood of survival.
Of the different types of flotation allowed, inflatable PFDs either provide full buoyancy without any user intervention other than commissioning (i.e. PFDs inflated by a fully automated method) or require the user to initiate inflation.
Hybrid PFDs always provide some buoyancy, but rely on the same methods as inflatable PFDs to achieve full buoyancy. Naturally with live PFDs, the user only needs to plug in the PFD to achieve its class performance.
ISO 12402 is intended to serve as a guide to manufacturers, purchasers and users of such safety equipment in ensuring that the equipment provides an effective standard of performance in use. It is equally important that the designer encourages the wearing of equipment by making it comfortable and attractive for continued use on or near water rather than being stored in a closet for emergency use.
The primary function of a PFD is to support the user in reasonable safety in the water. Within the two classes, alternative attributes make some PFDs more suitable for some conditions than others or easier to use and maintain than others.
