NWSP 020.5.RO (15) Abrasion Resistance of Nonwoven Fabrics

Another nonwoven standard procedure (NWSP) is the NWSP 020.5.RO (15) standard, which provides a test method for the abrasion resistance of nonwovens. This standard describes the abrasion resistance of nonwovens using the nonwoven modified Martindale abrasion test method.

NWSP 020.5.RO (15) Abrasion Resistance of Nonwoven Fabrics

Abrasion resistance is defined as the ability of a surface to resist abrasion by friction. Due to the fine structure of silk fibers, abrasion resistance is an important parameter in silk fabrics. The ASTM D4966-12 standard published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is the most widely used abrasion test method. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM D4966-12 Standard test method for abrasion resistance of textile fabrics (Martindale abrasion test method).

The resistance to abrasion is affected by the test conditions. For example, the nature of the abrasive, the stress on the abrasive, the pressure between the sample and the abrasive, and dimensional changes in the sample are effective. Wear resistance is measured by the number of cycles. The number of cycles required to create a pin hole in the test specimen or break a set of threads is taken into account.

This test method is applied using the Martindale abrasion tester, and all types of textile fabrics are tested using this method. Only fabrics with a pile depth greater than 2 mm are difficult. In this context, the abrasion resistance of nonwoven fabrics is also tested according to this standard.

Compared to woven materials, fibers in nonwovens are joined together by entanglement or chemical bonding. The fibers in woven fabrics used to produce woven fabrics are combined with the strong inter-fiber forces obtained by the spinning process. The strength of the nonwoven fiber is therefore determined by the structure of the fiber.

Therefore, the entanglement or bonding strength between the fibers in the fabric is determined. The structure of the fabric determines how the fibers will be bonded, so different properties arise for different manufactured fabrics. The bond strength of the fabric depends not only on the properties of the fiber but also on the fiber interaction in the nonwoven fabric. These described properties also affect the abrasion resistance of nonwoven fabrics.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides abrasion resistance testing services of NWSP 020.5.RO (15) Nonwoven fabrics to the demanding enterprises within the framework of laboratory services of materials with a trained and expert staff.
