EN 14683, a European standard, describes the design, production and performance requirements and test methods for medical face masks to limit infectious agents from personnel to patients in surgical procedures and other medical settings with similar requirements. A medical face mask with a suitable microbial barrier is also effective in reducing the emission of infective agents from the nose and mouth of a carrier or a patient with clinical symptoms.
This European standard does not only apply to masks for personal protection of healthcare professionals. There are other mask standards used as personal protective breathing apparatus.
Infection of infective agents occurs in various ways during surgery in operating rooms and other medical fields. The main sources of contamination are the mouths and noses of employees. The main intended use of medical face masks is to protect the patient from infective agents, and also in some cases to protect the employee using the mask from splashing of potentially contaminated fluids and live particles. Medical face masks are designed to be used by patients and healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of spread of infections, especially in epidemic situations.
Medical face masks specified in the EN 14683 standard are classified into two groups according to bacterial filtration efficiency: Type I and Type II. Type I medical face masks should be used only for patients and others, to reduce the risk of spread of infections, especially in epidemic situations. These masks are not designed by healthcare professionals for use in an operating theater or similar medical settings. Masks designed for this purpose are Type II masks.
