EN 16523-1, a European standard, defines the requirements and test methods for determining material resistance to the penetration of chemicals in personal protective equipment. This standard has replaced the European standard EN 374-3.
As workplace health and safety requirements, ethical trade, and community awareness have developed, it has become more important to protect workers against hazardous chemicals in work environments. Protective clothing, gloves and shoes to be sold in European Union countries must bear the CE mark to show that they are approved according to the principles of personal protection equipment directive.
Within the scope of the Directive, all category III and category II personal protective equipment products require type approval by the notified body. In order to determine the resistance of chemical protective gloves against the penetration of chemicals and to put CE mark on these gloves, it is required to perform product tests according to the test methods described in EN ISO 374-1 and EN 16523-1 standards by the notified body evaluating the gloves. The results of these tests determine the relevant symbols to be used in packaging and labeling.
Permeation is the movement of a chemical through a material at the molecular level. Sometimes it occurs without any physical changes in the material, such as permeability, swelling, cracking or a decrease in its elasticity. Therefore, even if the material appears to be unaffected, the glove may not provide adequate protection. In protective gloves, the material and thickness of the glove are important factors in whether the glove provides adequate protection against a particular chemical.
The standard in question has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 16523-1 Determination of material resistance to penetration of chemicals - Part 1: Penetration with potentially hazardous liquid chemicals under continuous contact conditions.
Within the scope of protective clothing tests, TS EN 16523-1 provides testing services for determination of material resistance against the penetration of chemicals by our organization.
