TS EN 16689 Protective Clothing for Firefighters

Uncontrolled fires always occur in different places, such as natural areas, structural buildings and vehicles. Firefighters often have to work in these uncontrolled areas, and thermal protective clothing is needed for firefighters' safety. For this reason, test standards are developed to evaluate the thermal protective and physiological performances of the different types of fabrics used in thermal protective clothing and related factors for the performance of thermal protective clothing are emphasized.

EN 16689, a European standard, is one of the standards designed for this purpose. This standard describes the minimum requirements for firefighters and technical rescue team clothing. Protection of firefighters is important, especially in cases where there is a risk of protection against mechanical risks, limited heat and flame and prominence risks.

This standard covers the overall garment design, the lowest performance levels of the material used, the test methods to be used to determine these performance levels, and the marking and information criteria provided by the manufacturer.

However, the EN 16689 standard does not cover clothing used to protect against risks associated with fires, forest fires, fire rescue, handling hazardous chemicals, chainsaws and water and rope rescue, unless combined with other special personal protective equipment and tested accordingly. It also does not cover the protection of the head, hands and feet in relation to chemical, radiological and electrical hazards. These conditions are included in other European standards.

The standard in question was published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) in our country with the following title: TS EN 16689 Protective clothing for firefighters - Performance requirements for protective clothing for technical rescue.
