The only protection a motorcyclist involved in a traffic accident has against injury is the clothing he was wearing at the time. Motorcyclist clothing is often worn as an extension of normal clothing and provides protection against environmental conditions such as wind, water and cold, but motorcycle clothing that meets the requirements of this standard also provides some protection against injury in the event of an accident. It is intended not to prevent a driver from controlling his machine. It must have an appearance acceptable to the user.
This European Standard relates primarily to the protection provided by clothing against injury in accidents. The hazards to which motorcyclists are exposed vary greatly depending on the physical environment, such as the nature of the road or mountain slope, the climatic environment, the traffic environment, the speed at which the motorcycle is driven, and the skill of the rider. It is not practical to obtain total clothing performance against every combination of hazards present. This standard therefore contains requirements for single properties of single articles of clothing or simple combinations of clothing.
