TS EN 1384 Helmets for Equine Activities

EN 1384, a European standard, defines the requirements and test methods for protective helmets used in equestrian activities. Equine helmets keep the rider safe as long as it is properly seated, dropped or damaged.

This European standard carries the initials of the country in which the helmet was tested. For example, there is DIN in helmets tested in Germany, BS in helmets tested in England, and TR prefixes in carcasses tested in our country. The standards published in different countries are the same in terms of content.

In December 2014, the European Union announced that EN 1384 helmet certification standard will be withdrawn. Since 2017, helmets have been complying with one or more standards. If the helmet is certified according to EN 1384 standard, PAS 015: 2011 may be approved according to the standard for helmets for riding use, the standard specification for the protective helmet used in horse sports and equestrianism, and other similar standards. In fact, the new standards consist of several technical modifications aimed at developing the highly secure EN 1163-15 standard. In our country, EN 1384 standard is still in force.

The purpose of helmet standards designed for equine activities is to maximize safety in sports. Except where the sports rules determine otherwise, competing drivers must wear a helmet that has been approved with the chin strap always attached.

After the withdrawal of the EN 1384 safety standard in Europe, since January 2017, the EN 1384 standard is not allowed and the new VG1 standard is complied with. The VG1 standard is the temporary European standard published in 2014.
