EN 421, a European standard, defines the requirements and test methods for gloves with protective properties against ionizing radiation and radioactive contamination. This standard describes the qualities that gloves that provide protection against ionizing radiation and radioactive contamination must have.
The standard in question applies to gloves that provide protection for arms and shoulders, gloves mounted on their permanent casings and intermediate sleeves used between gloves and permanent casings. The requirements of this European standard do not apply to protective gloves against X-ray radiation. The specified level of protection and protection features must be labeled on the glove. This label shows protection against radioactive particles.
Gloves used to protect against ionizing radiation and radioactive contamination must be impermeable and must have been penetrated according to the test method in the EN 374 standard. Roughly, photons or particles with energy above 10 electrons are radiation types with ionizing properties. The main types of radiation with ionizing energy are: alpha particles, beta particles, cosmic rays, gamma rays, and X-ray atoms.
Such gloves must pass an air pressure leak test and provide a high level of resistance to water vapor penetration.
