EN 443, a European standard, defines the requirements and test methods for protective helmets used in fire fighting activities in thousands and other structures. This European standard describes the essential features required for the level of protection, comfort and durability for helmets used by firefighters. It also allows options to consider certain national requirements. Helmets conforming to this standard do not need to be designed for special applications, for example oil fires, forest fires and so on.
In order to be able to use a firefighting helmet in different application scenarios before and after the market, it must be tested and documented according to the relevant standards. The basic approach of the EN 443 standard is to list, evaluate and obtain test scenarios from the hazards that will arise during various tasks. As a result, helmets that meet these standard requirements provide the user with the highest level of protection.
Helmets used for fire fighting in buildings and other structures are subject to the EN 443 standard, helmets for combating forest and land fires are subject to the EN 16471 standard, helmets for technical rescue EN 16473 standard, and high performance visors designed for use with personal eye equipment and protective helmets only EN 14458 It is subject to the standard.
The main requirements specified in the EN 443 standard are: penetration resistance, shock absorption, flame absorption, transverse and longitudinal deformation, effectiveness of the retention system, electrical properties, chemical protection, and face and eye protection.
