TS EN 61331-3 Protective Clothing, Goggles and Protective Patient Armor

Standard 61331-3, a European standard, applies to protective equipment, such as protective clothing and goggles, designed to protect people from X radiation up to 150 kV during radiological examinations and interventional procedures. This standard also addresses the general requirements for material properties used in design and manufacture, the lowest thinning properties of materials, marking and forms of declaration of conformity to this standard.

It covers the protective clothing generally used for the protection of the operator. For example, protective gowns, shield collars, protective gloves, protective one-finger gloves, protective glasses. It also includes protective equipment such as protective apparel gowns used for patient protection, testicular shields, ovarian shields, and protective gowns for dental use. This second set of protective equipment is mostly used during radiological examinations to minimize the effects of radiation on reproductive organs in terms of genetic damage.

Exposure to high radiation levels has various effects such as vomiting, bleeding, fainting, hair loss and skin deterioration in humans. However, in general, X-rays provide low-dose radiation that is not believed to cause any immediate health problems. Today, X-rays are a vital imaging tool used all over the world. Since it was used to display bones a hundred years ago, X-ray has saved countless lives and has helped a number of important discoveries.

The standard in question was published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) in our country with the following title: TS EN 61331-3 X-ray protective devices used for diagnosis in medicine - Part 3: Protective clothing, glasses and protective patient armor.
