TS EN ISO 13287 Shoe Skid Resistance

Explaining the requirements and test methods for shoe slip resistance, the EN ISO 13287 standard is actually a European standard and has been re-published by the International Standards Organization (ISO). Testing and evaluating the anti-slip properties of shoes are of great importance in terms of preventing anti-slip accidents. Many different methods and devices have been developed for years to measure the slip resistance of flooring and shoes.

Various test methods and grading systems have been adopted in different European countries. However, since these test methods are based on different principles and used under different conditions, no unity has been achieved between them. Each of them has its own advantages and has flaws and none are perfect test methods.

In this regard, the EN ISO 13287 standard fills an important gap. While applying this international standard that explains the method of measuring the slip resistance of the shoes, the shoe material to be tested is placed on a ceramic tile or steel floor and it is subjected to a certain normal force to move horizontally relative to the surface.

Meanwhile, the glycerin or sodium lauryl sulfate solution applied to the surface acts as a contaminant. During the test, the friction force is measured and the dynamic friction coefficient is calculated. Depending on the test conditions, the friction coefficients must meet the following requirements in the EN 20345 standard:

  • Front heel drift, ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution
  • Advanced flat slip, ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution
  • Front heel slip, steel floor with glycerine
  • Advanced flat slip, steel floor with glycerine

The standard in question has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 13287 Personal protective equipment - Shoe - Test method for slip resistance.

Within the scope of protective clothing tests, TS EN ISO 13287 Shoe slip resistance test services are also provided by our organization.
