TS EN ISO 20346 Protective Footwear

Explaining the requirements and test methods for protective footwear, the EN ISO 20346 standard is a European standard on its basis and has been re-published by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This international standard describes the basic and optional additional requirements for general-purpose protective shoes such as mechanical risks, slip resistance, thermal risks, ergonomic behavior.

Specific risks are covered by complementary business standards. For example, shoes for firefighters, electrically insulated shoes, protection against chainsaw injuries, protection against chemicals and molten metal splashes, and protection for motor bike riders.

EN ISO 20349 standard includes certain requirements such as penetration resistance, antistatic shoes, energy absorption around the heel, thermal insulation, cold insulation, upper water resistance, heat resistance of the outsole, water resistance and oil resistance.

The penetration resistance of the protective shoes is measured in the laboratory environment using a certain diameter of a cut nail and a certain force. Higher forces or smaller diameter nails increase the risk of penetration. In such cases, alternative preventive measures must be taken.

Meanwhile, more and more electrostatic sensitive materials are used in the production of protective shoes, and controlling the unwanted electrostatic charge plays a more important role in this industry. In certain working environments, safety shoes must be suitable for electrostatic charge. In this regard, in addition to the EN ISO 20346 standard, EN ISO 20345 and EN 61340 standards are also complied with.
