Sample lintels are simply supported and subjected to vertically applied loads to determine flexural strength, shear resistance and deflection.

Materials for clamping elements of composite lintels shall conform to the manufacturer's specifications. The sampling method shall comply with EN 845-2. The minimum number of samples for bending will be three and for shearing three.

Apply the load continuously or in at least six increments up to the maximum expected test load. Use any suitable load rate, with failures between 15 minutes and 30 minutes after the test starts.

When testing bending strength, use a uniformly distributed load or alternatively a range of point loads that give maximum shear and equivalent bending moment equivalent to that obtained from an evenly distributed load.

Watch for vertical and horizontal deflection at mid-span. The vertical deflection should be measured at the center wing position, or for biplane walls the deflection should be measured at the mid wing position of both wings and the larger of the two values ​​recorded.

The average vertical end deflection of the lintel (measured as close to the bearing as possible) can be deducted from the vertical deflection at the mid-span.
