It can be applied to textiles made from all fibers in the form of yarn or fabric, whether dyed, printed or otherwise colored. It is not recommended to use this method on carpets or prints where areas may be too small.

Test procedures using both dry and water-wet white test cloth squares are given. Washing, dry cleaning, drawing, ironing, finishing etc. The test may be performed before, after, or before and after such treatment, as this can affect the degree of color transfer from a material.

A colored test sample is rubbed with a white pottery test cloth under controlled conditions. The color transferred to the white test cloth is evaluated by comparison with the Gray Scale for Staining or the Chromatic Transfer Scale and a grade is given.
