AATCC 81 Determination of pH Value of Water Extract from Wet-Treated Textiles

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of AATCC 81 standard. The AATCC 81 standard determines the pH of washed or bleached wet-processed textiles.

AATCC 81 Determination of pH Value of Water Extract from Wet-Treated Textiles

To make a quantitative determination, chemicals that affect pH must be removed from the textile sample, collected as a water extract and then accurately measured with a pH meter.

Boil 250 mL of distilled water for 10 minutes at medium speed. Immerse the sample, cover the beaker with a watch glass and boil for another 20 minutes.

Allow the closed beaker and contents to cool to room temperature. Remove the sample with tweezers and allow excess liquid to drip back into the extract.

Determine the pH of the extract using a pH meter operated according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The pH of the water extract depends on the chemical treatment previously applied to the textile, the pH of the washing water and the efficiency of the washing process.

Normally, the pH of the water extract will be higher after caustic boiling than after bleaching. The pH may be lower if the textile is cleaned after bleaching.

Textiles with high pH values may show yellowing tendencies, produce tonal changes after dyes are consumed and set, and cause a reduction in the curing of resin finishes or the discharge of plasticizers.

Our company, EUROLAB, provides services to determine the pH value of the water extract obtained from wet processed textiles, within the framework of national and international standards, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies. Contact EUROLAB to get testing service under the AATCC 81 standard.
