AATCC TM61 Color Fastness Against Laundering: Accelerated Test Standard

AATCC TM61 standard, accelerated laundry tests, to evaluate the color fastness to washing of textiles that are expected to withstand frequent washing.

Fabric discoloration and surface changes from the detergent solution and abrasive action of five typical hand or home washes with or without chlorine are roughly approximated in a 45-minute test. However, the dyeing effect produced by five typical hand or home washes cannot always be predicted by the 45-minute test. Dyeing is a function of the ratio of colored fabrics to undyed fabrics, the fiber content of fabrics in the wash load, and other end-use conditions that are not always predictable.

When this test method was originally developed, the various options of this method were for evaluating color change and staining on an accelerated basis with five household or commercial laundry washes.

Over the years commercial laundering procedures have changed and commercial cleaning today includes many different types of processes that cannot be repeated with a single accelerated laboratory procedure depending on the type of product being cleaned. In 2005, all references to commercial laundering were removed as it is not known whether these procedures accurately replicated the typical commercial laundering processes in use today.

Samples are tested under conditions of appropriate temperature, detergent solution, bleaching and abrasive action so that the color change is similar to that occurring in five hand or home washes. Color change is achieved in a suitably short time. The abrasive effect is the result of the frictional effects of the fabric against the can, the low liquor ratio, and the impact of the steel balls on the fabric.

Color fastness is the resistance of a material to change in any of its color properties, to the transfer of colorants to adjacent materials, or to both, as a result of exposure to any environment that may be encountered during processing, testing, or storage.

Washing textile materials is a process aimed at removing soiling or stains by treatment (washing) with an aqueous detergent solution and normally includes subsequent rinsing, extraction and drying.

Our organization also provides AATCC TM61 Color Fastness Against Laundering: Accelerated Test Standard testing services to businesses within the framework of laboratory testing services.
