EN 13726-1 Test Methods for Primary Dressings - Part 1: Properties of Absorbency

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 13726-1 standard. This part of the EN 13726 standard specifies recommended test methods for evaluating some aspects of the absorbency of primary wound dressings. EN 13726 specifies test methods and does not include performance requirements. Part 1 of this standard describes test methods for different aspects of absorbency.

EN 13726-1 Test Methods for Primary Dressings - Part 1: Properties of Absorbency

Unless otherwise stated, test specimens are conditioned and tests are performed at (21 ± 2)°C and 60% RH ± 15% RH.

The purpose of the test is to evaluate the performance of dressings typically used on moderately to heavily exuding wounds where total absorbent capacity is an important property. It is only suitable for dressings that will remain physically intact and reach their maximum absorbent capacity within 30 minutes under test conditions.

The test is suitable for use with most types of alginate wraps, for example in sheet or rope (packaging) form. In the case of alginate dressings, the ratio of test liquid to sample weight is an important factor because of the interaction that occurs.

It consists of sodium chloride and calcium chloride solution containing 142 mmol sodium ions and 2,5 mmol calcium ions as chloride salts. This solution has an ionic composition comparable to human serum or wound exudate. It is prepared by dissolving 8,298 g of sodium chloride and 0,368 g of calcium chloride dihydrate in deionized water and making it up to 1 liter in a metered balloon.

Absorption capacity is expressed as the average mass of solution retained per 100 cm2 (as presented to the wound) or grams of sample (for cavity dressing). This test aims to evaluate the fluid carrying capacity of waterproof dressings typically used for longer than 24 hours and used where exudate absorption and management of the microenvironment are important.

As the test material, equipment made of corrosion-resistant material with an inner diameter of (35,7 ± 0,1) mm (cross-sectional area 10 cm2), a flange at both ends, and each of which can hold 20 ml of test solution is used.

At one end of the cylinder is an annular clamping plate with a hole area of 10 cm². An impermeable tape or alternative sealant can be used in this area to prevent sweating from the edges of the dressing. At the other end of the cylinder is a solid metal plate the full diameter of the flange. A sealing ring is also recommended to ensure an effective seal against the flange. The plates at both ends are clamped in position against the flanges.
